The Lovers card represents the first lesson of the initiate. In this lesson, they learn the essence of the spiritual path. Life begins at the moment of birth and ends at the moment of death. Why does a person die before reaching enlightenment? Because their life path is cluttered and filled with unrealized challenges. The person accumulates tensions, anger, and guilt, which reduce their ability to listen to their intuition, thereby delaying or halting their spiritual development. Maintaining an energetically clean spiritual path allows for seamless transition between spiritual and physical realities, enabling the person to be open to listening to the intuition that reveals the messages of the cosmic plan for them. In the Lovers card, the teacher guides the initiate in clearing their spiritual path.
Key steps to clear the path include:
Parting with people who are no longer part of your life: Letting go of memories, objects, or clothes that no longer fit the current self. A few years ago, a text circulated via email describing a voicemail message: “”Hello, you’ve reached Gadi. I’m currently going through many changes in my life, but you’re welcome to leave a message. If I don’t return your call, it means you’re part of the change.””
Proper time management
Confronting fears, unpleasant situations, and repeated hurts from close ones: Creating change (the fear of the outcome is greater than the desire to change. The outcome is always surprising).
Releasing anger, pain, insult, and grief, and most importantly, forgiving.
As Clarissa Pinkola Estés wrote in “”Women Who Run with the Wolves””: “”To let go, to lay down, to restrain, to avoid punishment, to forget, to retreat from memory, to refuse to linger and think, to forgive, to abandon the debt.””
The querent is in a situation where they must make a decision or face a dilemma, and they need to choose. The querent may not struggle with making decisions, but to ease the decision-making process, they need to clear their spiritual path. The querent may be afraid to listen to their heart, fearing the consequences of taking responsibility for their life. Sometimes the querent’s path is so cluttered that they don’t know what is right.
The Lovers card does not specifically deal with love, and it is unclear why it is named as such. However, it certainly deals primarily with the individual’s relationship with themselves, their connection to their surroundings, social relationships, and all relationships based on a clean life path
It is important to remember that this is a card from the Major Arcana, representing the spiritual realm. The querent’s soul is in a place that desires to clear the path and create clean, pure relationships. Clearing the path requires courage, effort, and perseverance.
