The Justice card is a blocking card, symbolizing a situation where a person has chosen a path but encounters obstacles that hinder their progress. This is the moment to remove those barriers and not allow anything or anyone, whether material or emotional, to stand in the way. The sword of justice must act in the querent’s favor when held in their hand.

The Meaning of The Card

The Justice card represents commitment and responsibility in life, for one’s decisions and actions. Clear vision and measured actions are what determine fate. Cosmic justice is impartial, sharp, and merciless. Punishment is not a whim but a restoration of balance.

Mythology

The Justice card is represented by the goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom, war, law, and justice. The Egyptian goddess Ma’at embodies another aspect of the card. Her role was to weigh the hearts of the deceased. On one side of the scales lay the heart, and on the other side, a feather. If the heart was lighter than the feather, the deceased was sent to paradise; if the heart was heavier, the deceased was sent to the underworld. A heavy heart is a bound heart, while a light heart knows how to distinguish between what is important and what is trivial. A light heart knows how to remove the distractions that bind it and prevent the spirit from growing. Another role of the goddess Ma’at was to uphold truth, both in the world of the gods and in the world of humans. Through truth, the cosmic order was maintained.

Representation of the Card in a Reading

The Justice card represents a process divided into three stages. In the seeker stage, there is a sense of wanting change, and the person examines what is missing in their life. As the process continues, the seeker becomes an initiate and finds the teacher who will guide them on their path. In the final stage, the initiate becomes a master, finds their purpose, and fulfills it. After the initiate goes through the process represented by the Justice card and internalizes its insights, they will become a master. At this stage, the initiate learns the importance of the relationship between the material world and the spiritual world. To make room for the spiritual world, one must remove from the path of life those elements from the material world that serve as distractions, such as fears, anxieties, masks, and lies. The initiate detaches from the factors that bind them to the material world. The Justice card warns against creating karma, against forming negative imprints in consciousness. It is crucial not to hide anything, not to lie, and to give truth a central place in life. The card shows that there is no reason to hide; one must present the truth and reveal their inner essence. When a person opens up to the world and shows who they truly are, that is where their power lies, where balance is found. A person can only fulfill their purpose if they are not bound by people, processes, or fears—freedom from these brings one to a place of realization. Situations where one needs to leave a job or end a relationship often involve the problem of how one responds to the event that needs to be removed from their life, the fear of confrontation. Internal honesty in this situation is crucial. It is important to understand that one must remove from their life the situations they have faced, not the situations they have run away from.
It’s important to remember that this is a Major Arcana card, representing the realm of the spirit. The seeker’s soul is in a place of wanting to remove obstructive elements from their life. To successfully manifest this card in the material world, one must be true to oneself without pretense. They need to listen to their inner voice and be honest with themselves.
