The Judgment card is a delaying card, a card of maturation and process. The person was in a state of inactivity and stillness; the internal processes have matured within them, and with receiving this card, they begin to apply the internal process to their life. ‘And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt’ (Daniel 12:2). The querent is at a stage where they must awaken and develop concerning the subject of the question; the process cannot be rushed. The birth will occur when the baby is ready to come into the world.

The Meaning of The Card

The Judgment card hints at redemption, an event where all barriers are removed. It signifies changes in worldviews. Even in the darkest place, there is an opportunity for growth; the person awakens, forgives themselves and their surroundings, and reconciles with themselves and others. This forgiveness leads to enlightenment.

Mythology

The Judgment card is represented in Greek mythology by the god Hades. The journey to the Underworld is intended to become a journey of rebirth. Hades represents the hidden and the dark, but also fullness and abundance. He is known as the good teacher and keeper of the gate; his world is elusive, full of secrets, and frightening, but serves as a source of wisdom and intuitive advice. The descent to the Underworld, like the process the person undergoes, is a frightening descent that causes despondency. However, in the person’s subconscious lie many treasures of creativity, drive, and power, free from fears and conditioning. When the person returns from the Underworld or from the depths of the subconscious to the conscious and to the light, they amplify their consciousness and their life with these treasures.

Representation of the Card in a Reading

The card represents a state of change, awakening, and awareness. It marks the end of a chapter in the person’s life. There is a feeling of stagnation, but this is the stage where the person finds their personal path and identity. Who they were from the beginning of the journey until this card exists and evolves into a higher, cleaner, and purer state. There is development, not loss. The person becomes more whole due to the process they have undergone. When this card appears in a reading, it signifies to the querent that they need to awaken. The card divides life into two: before its appearance, the person was passive and their consciousness was dormant. Now, the person must awaken. There may be a period of maturation and process required, but ultimately, change will occur.
It’s important to remember: This is a Major Arcana card, representing the realm of the spirit. The querent’s soul is in a place of Judgment, a day of awakening and revival. To manifest this card, the person must choose to awaken, to create change, and to let go of the fear of change. They must relinquish a state of dormant consciousness.
