The card does not provide an answer; therefore, it is inherently a blocker. The card represents freedom, the ability to choose, it is the beginning of the process and also its end. It is a warning, a realization that cannot be explained in words but can only be felt. A card that does not give an answer, as the person is at the beginning of the process and, in many cases, does not yet know the right question.

The Meaning of The Card

The Fool card symbolizes the beginning of the journey, the start. It is a symbol of innocence and represents the potential within a person. The Fool card: The Meaning of The Symbols
Card Symbols Symbol Meaning
Rising Sun The sun illuminates and blesses the Fool’s path. It symbolizes expansion, growth, energy, and creativity. The sunrise is a symbol of new beginnings, a source of life. Midday indicates power, strength, and creative efforts, while the sunset points to an ending or transition. It represents courage and wisdom. It warms but can also burn.
Travel Sack The sack represents those parts of the spirit that the Fool is unaware of since the sack hangs behind his back. The sack symbolizes the karma accumulated in various lifetimes and the experiences in this lifetime. It contains fears, doubts, and mistrust but also the potential inherent in the person.
Upturned Face Reflects his potential for realization, aiming high, full of ideals, but also blind to obstacles.
White Rose Innocence, blossoming, and renewal.
Light and Colorful Clothing Lack of maturity, an attempt to attract attention, and clothing unsuitable for the journey.
8 Yellow Circles The circle is a symbol of spiritual completeness and inner strength.
8 Red Lines The lines are a symbol of action, building, and creation.
Yellow Background The color yellow symbolizes the sun, its light, and radiates spiritual energy.
Dog Loyalty and instincts, representing the Fool’s survival side. The dog symbolizes man’s best friend who accompanies the Fool on his journey, but it also represents the animal instinct that guards the person. It can be a source of fear that delays progress. In the developmental process, the dog will transform into caution and awareness of dangers.
Edge of a Cliff Realizing potential and creating change brings the person to soar above the abyss. Failure to realize potential will bring them to crash onto the harsh reality. The willingness to jump expresses boldness and an attempt to realize potential, but the experience of landing in reality can be painful.

Mythology

The card is symbolized by Uranus, the god of the sky, belonging to the pre-Olympian gods. It symbolizes the primordial night before the light was created, the source of the birth of consciousness, the awareness of reality, and physical creation. Uranus represents the creative thought. The struggle between Uranus and his son Cronus, the god of time, who rebelled against him and seized power, symbolizes the beginning of time and the continuum in which a person is born, the starting point moving towards annihilation and the end.

Representation of the Card in a Reading

The card represents new beginnings; the querent is about to start a new chapter, leaving the old behind. The querent is in a place where they must prioritize freedom above all else; they must not give up their freedom. No financial, emotional, or psychological reward is sufficient for the querent to allow themselves to sell their freedom to act and advance in life on the path to spiritual growth. The Fool is full of optimism, a zest for life, enthusiasm, creativity, and courage. The Fool represents enlightenment, the stage where a person reaches spiritual development. It is a state of wholeness, balance, and light. All 77 cards are spiritual and physical steps on the path to enlightenment, on the way to understanding the essence of the Fool. The Fool in the deck is the Joker; it can replace any card because they are all part of it. The Fool, in a state of enlightenment, is free from the bonds of life; therefore, it symbolizes freedom in a reading. (The Fool is one of three cards—the High Priestess and the Moon—that do not give an answer but rather guidance.) The querent is bound, and until they free themselves from their bonds, they will not know the answer to their question. Because at this moment, the querent is bound, they see reality from a very specific perspective. Once they find their freedom, there is a chance that the question will become irrelevant, as the querent will find themselves in a new place.
“It is important to remember that this is a card from the Major Arcana, representing the spiritual realm. The querent’s soul is in a place of searching, understanding consciousness, in a process of exploring the environment, and in need of fulfillment. Will the querent embark on a path of spiritual development, or will they prefer to stay within the familiar and known? Even though the need to embark on a journey to understand inner freedom has arisen within them, due to an inner insight that is still unclear to the seeker. “
